This week on the Magnet Minute, Amy shares advice for optimizing YouTube videos in order to get more views and grow awareness of your brand on the platform.

The first tip is in the tag, which people often overlook. By tagging appropriately, you put in keywords that will help people find your content if they’re searching on the topic. You don’t always get the opportunity to put everything you’d ideally like to in the description and headline, so this is a great place to cover your bases.

In each of your videos you should type your channel name in the tags area as well, just as it appears in the URL, so that you are a common denominator in what’s being recommended for the viewer next. This is in addition to the other tags you’re adding. Why not encourage them to watch more of your content by working these tags in your favor?

Another big factor in how your video performs in search engines has to do with the description. YouTube can’t watch your video, so you have to tell the platform what it’s all about. One or two lines in your description isn’t going to cut it. Instead, write a thorough synopsis of what people can expect to find in the video (even if it gives away something special). Odds are: it’s not going to spoil anything for people who end up watching your video, as they’ll likely watch it before reading it. But it will have helped them land there in the first place.

You could also provide a transcript. There’s no better description of what’s happening in the video than a exact play-by-play. Doing this will significantly increase your optimization because YouTube will know every single thing that happened. It will even increase the accuracy of the automated captions YouTube provides, if you don’t want to upload a caption file of your own.

Finally, the most important tip you can use to optimize videos on YouTube is to get to the point in the headline. If you don’t get to the meat of the video in the first 4-5 words, you’re going to make it harder for people to decide whether or not to watch, even if YouTube helped you to rank higher based on everything else you inputted. And if you add a custom thumbnail, you can add text there too, which can help backup whatever your headline is and further encourage a new viewer to take in your content.
